Botanical
Classification
Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. — “Silybum” is an old name for thistle; marianum refers to the Virgin Mary, from legend of white “milk” markings on the leaves.
Family: Asteraceae (daisy family).
Constituents Silymarin complex (flavonolignans: silybin, isosilybin, silydianin, silychristin), flavonoids, fixed oil (rich in linoleic acid), tocopherols (vitamin E), sterols, and proteins.
Properties Hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, cholagogue (stimulates bile flow), mild digestive tonic.
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Liver issues including toxin exposure, alcohol-related liver stress, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and viral hepatitis (as adjunctive support — not a cure).
Supports bile flow and digestion; historically used for gallbladder complaints.
Antioxidant support for metabolic and inflammatory conditions.
May assist recovery from mushroom poisoning (Amanita phalloides) — silymarin and derivatives are used clinically in some countries.
External Uses Rarely used externally. Occasionally used in poultices for skin inflammation in traditional practice, but not common today.
Other Culinary use is minimal; young leaves (spines removed) and stems can be eaten as vegetables; seeds sometimes used as a coffee substitute.
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of herb. Cover and infuse for 5-10 min. Strain, drink & enjoy up to 3 times daily.
Safety and
Precaution
