Calendula officinalis L. — “Calendula” derives from calendae (Latin for “little calendar” or “first day of the month”), referring to its near year-round blooming.  ‘Officinalis’ denotes its historical medicinal use.

Family: Asteraceae (daisy family).

Constituents Triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene), essential oils, bitter resins, sterols, mucilage, polysaccharides, and coumarins.
Properties Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, vulnerary (wound-healing), antispasmodic, emmenagogue (stimulates menstrual flow), mild lymphatic tonic.
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of & traditionally used for:
gastrointestinal inflammation, gastritis, ulcers, colitis, and indigestion.
Supports immune response in colds and lymphatic congestion. Mild bitter actions support liver and gallbladder function. Mild antispasmodic effects may help with menstrual cramps.
External Uses Topical preparations are widely used for wound healing: cuts, burns, abrasions, eczema, rashes, and insect bites.
Common in ointments, salves, compresses, and rinses for skin irritation, acne, and sunburn.
Used as a mouthwash or gargle for oral inflammation (gingivitis, mouth ulcers, sore throat).
Can be used as a hair rinse for scalp conditions.
Other Popular in natural cosmetics, soaps, and skincare for its soothing and coloring qualities.
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of petals. Cover and infuse for 5-10 min. Strain, drink & enjoy up to 3 times daily
