| Properties | Carminative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, antiemetic, aromatic, nervine, analgesic. |
| Internal Uses | Beneficial for the treatment of: IBS, flatulence, intestinal colic, under active gallbladder (stimulates bile and digestive juice secretion), nausea, motion sickness, vomiting and diarrhoea, stomach ulcers, colic nerve pains, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, lack of appetite, rheumatism, painful periods and nervous headaches. As a nervine it may act as a tonic, easing anxiety, tension and hysteria. Good during colds and flu, fever, and for nasal catarrh. It may assist in keeping the mind clear, as well as assisting memory and calming exam-time nerves and fatigue. Can be used as an inhalant to relieve colds, chest infections and catarrh. |
| External Uses | As a bath it is a comforting for aches and pains, poor circulation, muscular pains and problem skin. Steamer for oily and problem skin. May relieve itching and inflammations. As a mouth wash for inflamed gums. |
| Other | For animals/Horses: stomach pain, vomiting, colic, liver ailments, flatulence, tainted milk, diarrhoea, mastitis, chills. Effective insecticide repels fish moths, ants, aphids and mealie bugs. |
| Preparation | Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of herb. Cover and infuse for 5-10 min. Strain and drink as often as required. |
| Safety and Precaution |
Do not give to children under 3 years. Peppermint can reduce milk flow in nursing mothers. Do not use the essential oil if pregnant or breast feeding. If unsure consult a health practitioner before use. |
