Melissa officinalis — Melissa is Greek for “honey bee,” referencing the plant’s attraction to bees; officinalis denotes its historical medicinal use
Constituents Essential oils (geranial, neral, citronellal, geraniol, linalool, β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide), rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid derivatives, flavonoids, triterpenes, oleanane, phenolics
Properties Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, sedative/nervine, anxiolytic, antidepressant mood-elevating, antiviral (notably HSV), antimicrobial (bacteria, fungi), cognitive-enhancing, and cardioprotective
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
mild anxiety, depression, stress and insomnia; digestive soothing for mild indigestion, bloating and spasms. Enhances cognitive function & mood, supports memory and focus. Shown to improve lipid profiles.
External Uses Topical preparations (standardised lemon-balm extracts) have shown benefit in clinical trials for herpes labialis (cold sores); Lemon Balm is also used in aromatherapy and topical tonics, but essential oil/topical use can sensitize some people.
Other Culinary: used in ice creams, salads, sauces, desserts, fish dishes, lemon balm pesto, herbal vinegar.
Aroma-therapeutic
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of herb. Cover and infuse for 5-10 min. Strain, drink & enjoy
