Constituents Saponins, iridoid and phenylethanoid glycosides, flavonoids, vitamin C and minerals, tannin, volatile oil
Properties Astringent, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, pain relief, antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, slight sedative, demulcent, diuretic.
Internal Uses Beneficial for the treatment of:
Cough, influenza, whooping cough, tuberculosis, bronchitis, hoarseness, pneumonia, earaches, colds, chills, swine flu, fever, allergies, tonsillitis, sore throat, asthma, diarrhoea, colic, gastrointestinal bleeding, migraines, joint pain and gout. It is also used as a sedative and as a diuretic (increase urine output).
Increases circulation in the lungs, nourishes the lungs with essential vitamins and minerals. Creates new mucous linings, cleanses toxins, clears phlegm and mucous.
External Uses As a warm press, may be applied to the skin for wounds, burns, haemorrhoids, bruises, frostbite, and skin infections (cellulitis). The leaves are used topically to soften, moisturise and protect the skin. May help to treat bacterial ear infections. Filter in a hot bath.
Other May be used to make topical creams and soap
Preparation Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb. Steep for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink. May be consumed up to 3 times per day.
Hot compress: Put 1-2 teaspoons of herb into a facecloth, wrap and dip into ½ a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Allow to cool enough not to burn the skin, squeeze excess water from the facecloth and apply to affected area.
Safety and Precaution Considered safe. Handling the dry herb may cause skin irritation. If pregnant or breastfeeding consult a health practitioner before use.
